Summer greetings from Hydria Water

The summer holiday is approaching and we would like to take the opportunity to wish all our customers, partners and employees a pleasant and relaxing holiday.

New rotating distributor handles up to 70% more strain and stress

At Hydria Water, work is constantly ongoing on the innovation and development of working methods and products for the future. When one of our clients experienced unforeseen problems with a rotating distributor and needed a more robust machine due to strong winds, the engineering department designed and built an entirely new heavy-duty rotating distributor.

– It was designed to be able to withstand both high winds and uneven loads. We have developed the design to have, among other things, a new top layer, and a created a machine that can handle 60–70% more strain and stress with the same component costs, Andreas Riedel, Technical Manager at Hydria Water, says.

Andreas explains that the engineering department works as a team; they first sketch proposals for products that they wish to create and then model them using simulation software. They then discuss their design, and following consultation with the client go forward with one of the suggestions – in this case a prototype heavy-duty rotating distributor, which has been installed and operational for a year at a wastewater treatment plant in Gnosjö, Sweden.

“The first machine we delivered to the Braviken paper mill ran practically flawlessly for almost 50 years”

The Braviken paper mill near Norrköping, Sweden employs 400 people and is one of the world’s most efficient paper mills in terms of production. In 1972 Hydria Water delivered a machine to the paper mill, and this year, 48 years later, they delivered a replacement machine.

– The previous machine ran practically flawlessly for almost 50 years – that is a good grade to have achieved, Hydra Water’s Technical Manager says with a smile.

The new machine is a 17-metre long, custom-made overhead travelling carriage with a sludge suction pump that purifies the water used in the mill’s processing.

– The sludge suction pump functions a little like a vacuum cleaner, purifying the 55°C process water of cellulose fibres. The basic function is the same as for the previous machine, but the new one has a more modern design and new, acid-resistant components.

The previous machine was constructed using black steel, and when the components began to wear it was felt that it would be better to upgrade to a new machine rather than renovate the old one. New technology, new materials that handle process water more efficiently, and a new, more compact control system, resulted in a great improvement for the paper mill as a whole.

– It’s a marked difference: we have moved from a control system the size of a small garden shed to one that measures 80 x 80 centimetres. We are good at technology, and much has changed over the past five decades.

The new machine was installed at the end of April in a water-filled tank.

– There were special requirements during installation, and it was not possible to empty the tank, which is normally done during installation, or even lower the water level. As a result, we installed it in a water-filled tank this time. Everyone involved rose to the challenge in an admirable way, Andreas concludes.

Field testing in Rävlanda, Sweden – “Visible results in just two weeks”

Since February, Hydria Water has been conducting field testing of channel filters at the Rävlanda and another, as yet secret, patent-pending solution at the Rävlanda wastewater treatment plant.

– Previously there was an older mechanical step-type screen; now the water from the pumping station is directed to our channel filter, which is the first part of the wastewater treatment plant and handles around 3500 pe, Rikard Karlsson at Hydria Water explains.

In 2019 the wastewater treatment plant filtered a total of 550 kg material, but with the new channel filter the screening has become almost too efficient, and in just two months 450 kg material was filtered.

Patrik Eliasson is an operations technician at Rävlanda wastewater treatment plant. He laughs when he remembers the panic-purchasing of waste containers shortly after the new machine had been installed.

– Before, two waste containers per week was enough, but with this machine we need six waste containers a week!

The field test is the largest that has been conducted at the plant since it was renovated 20 years ago, according to Patrik.

– I’m delighted; the process has been entirely smooth. The old screen is about to give up, but now I don’t think I would want to go back to that type of solution again. The technology and results are better with this solution – in addition, there is less sedimentation of sand and gravel in the machine than before, he says.

– The pre-sedimentation tank is cleaner than before, as is the picket fence thickener. It took only two weeks for a change to become visible in the sedimentation tanks and sludge; now, the amount of rags and cotton buds is vastly reduced.

Between February and the middle of May, the machine operated for 130 hours. The project will be concluded by the end of the summer.

– We are very grateful to have been given this opportunity. We’re very happy with the collaboration and feel that it has worked very well; the plant is situated in our local area, and provides us with opportunities for exciting product developments, Rikard says.

12-meter rotating conveyor sent to the USA

At a water reclamation plant in Palmetto, on the outskirts of Columbia, USA, several thousand cubic metres of sludge is purified and sorted into containers every year. Previously, the containers had to be constantly alternated as they became full, causing undesirable and inefficient downtime. In order to achieve a more efficient system, the water reclamation plant ordered a specially constructed rotating conveyor from Hydria Water. The reason for the client’s requirement for a rotating conveyor was that it should be able to deposit material in several containers placed in a row, without the need to empty or move the containers.

– The solution that we came up with is a 12-metre-long rotating conveyor that can be remotely controlled. The client is delighted and now has a much better and more efficient process, Henrik Karlgren, Senior Product Manager at Hydria Water, says.

Hydria Water solution reduces microplastic pollution

When a district heating plant in Sweden experienced problems with microplastics in the water, they turned to Hydria Water for a solution. Hydria Water recommended a stormwater overflow treatment system and installed a testing facility to evaluate its efficacy.

– We assembled a testing facility with a stormwater screen that has now been in operation for eight weeks. We have performed several tests, and the results exceeded the client’s expectations, Henrik Karlgren, Senior Product Manager at Hydria Water, says.

A 60 micron wire mesh that catches very small particles in the water was used in the tests, and there was a marked difference between the filtered water and the unfiltered water, with a reduction of more than 90% in microplastic particles larger than 60 microns.

– The test was a resounding success. The machine filters out all of the unwanted materials that we want it to – and even more, actually, the project manager at the district heating plant says.

At the moment, work is ongoing on expanding the stormwater overflow treatment system to full scale, similar to the stormwater overflow treatment facility that Hydria Water installed at the Hammargårds water reclamation plant in Kungsbacka, Sweden.

Greetings from Hydria Water’s new CEO

Robert Bjursten, the new CEO of Hydria Water, is now behind his desk at the company’s office in the Viared district in Borås, Sweden.

– It feels fantastic; I like hustle and bustle, and look forward to getting to grips with organisational aspects, creating forums, and working on our marketing. The staff is full of energy, and has a great deal of drive and knowledge!

At the moment, Sweden and the rest of the world is in the middle of the Covid-19 crisis; this involves a great scarcity of work, short-term layoffs, and anxiety among business owners. These are indeed unusual times to take over as a CEO, but at the moment Hydria Water’s production and sales organisation are up and running, and continue to produce, deliver, and service equipment for water treatment plants.

– It’s different, naturally; the global situation has changed. At the same time, there is nothing we can do about the situation; all we can do is adapt and move on, find new ways and learn. We are aware of the seriousness of the situation, but rather than pumping the brakes we are investing and currently hiring service personnel; at the moment, we are seeing no slump at all in our sales. During a hypothetical future decline, our goal is to make use of the time to educate the organisation, Robert says.

 

Comprehensive solution for the new Norefjell waste water treatment plant

At present, a new municipal waste water treatment plant is being built in Norefjell, Norway, for biological and chemical purification. The waste water treatment plant is dimensioned for a load of 10,000 , and capable of dealing with a very large seasonal variation, with high loads during the skiing and summer seasons. Hydria Water has signed an agreement with Krüger Kaldnes AS to deliver a comprehensive solution, including almost all of the mechanical equipment that exists between the inlet and outlet of the waste water treatment plant, such as spiral screens, sludge scrapers, sludge receivers, conveyors, .

– Hydria Water assisted in the planning of the waste water treatment plant, and worked closely with Krüger Kaldnes over the course of 18 months. We will support Krüger Kaldnes this summer by, among other things, supervising the installation. It is a great advantage for the client to be able to source most of their purchases of mechanical parts for the waste water teratment plant from one supplier, and this is an excellent and interesting reference case for us and our clients: through this project, we are able to show just how broad our range of products is, Philip Carlsson, Sales Engineer at Hydria Water, says.

The products will be sent from Hydria Water over the coming weeks, and be installed this summer. The facility is planned to be operational by the end of the year.

Information Hydria Water Covid-19

Hydria Water is staying updated on the development of Covid-19 on a day-to-day basis, and is following the recommendations issued by the Public Health Agency of Sweden. Our production and sales services are currently operating as normal, and production, deliveries, and servicing of equipment for water reclamation plants is continuing.

–Our operations are still up and running, although we have put in placeheightened precautionary measures. We want to take this opportunity to urge everyone to mind what you flush down your toilets. Unlike toilet paper, kitchen roll paper and wet wipes do not dissolve in water, and can easily clump together and blockpipes and pumps, causing unnecessary blockages in sewagedisposal systems, Andreas Riedel, Technical Manager at Hydria Water, says.

Hydria Water is both pleased and proud to present our new colleague, Peter Langelotz! Peter comes to us from Lamina System AB, where he worked in export sales with a focus on Mexico and South America for the last four and a half years.

– Hydria Water sparked my imagination due to issues relating to the environment and ensuring supplies of clean water. This is without doubt a business of the future, Peter says.

At Hydria Water, Peter will be focusing on export sales in Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland.
